Senator Steven Choi, Ph.D. (R-Irvine), today, announced the successful passage of Senate Bill 1021 on the California State Senate Floor, with bipartisan support.
SB 1021 would require the California Fish and Game Commission to expand supervised hunting and fishing opportunities for youth diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses, by creating an accommodation for children. Under the measure, the Commission would work with stakeholders, nonprofit organizations, and conservation groups to administer the program.
“SB 1021 is about giving hope and unforgettable experiences to children facing incredibly difficult circumstances,” said Senator Choi. “Studies and programs across the country have shown the positive impact outdoor experiences can have on young people and their families during challenging times, while maintaining California's strict conservation and stewardship standards.”
SB 1021 also encourages partnerships between the Department of Fish and Wildlife and nonprofit organizations to reduce costs to the state, while ensuring participants follow existing hunting and fishing laws.
“Field of Dreams is proud to sponsor SB 1021 and grateful to Senator Choi for his leadership on this important effort,” said Tom Dermody, Founder of Field of Dreams. “For children facing life-threatening illnesses, these outdoor experiences can provide hope, healing, and lasting memories for both the youth and their families. This bill creates an opportunity for California to safely expand access to those experiences while continuing to promote conservation and responsible outdoor stewardship.”
“This measure brings together compassion, conservation, and community partnership,” Senator Choi added. “I appreciate my Senate colleagues for recognizing the importance of this program and supporting its passage.”
SB 1021 will now advance to the California State Assembly for consideration.
