Today, Senator Steven Choi, Ph.D. (R-Irvine), announced that Senate Bill 971 received final Senate approval and is headed to the Governor’s desk. Sponsored by the California Senior Legislature, the bill supports local partnerships to help older Californians stay healthy, connected, and independent.
“Our seniors deserve opportunities to continue learning, build friendships, and remain active in their communities,” said Senator Choi. “SB 971 brings together trusted local organizations to support healthy aging and independent living. I urge the Governor to sign this bill.”
SB 971 would authorize local health departments, area agencies on aging, colleges, universities, and other appropriate county departments to establish Healthy Aging Community Partnership Programs with libraries, school districts, and community organizations. Activities could include technology assistance, exercise, arts and cultural programs, language learning, and shared meals.
Participation would be voluntary, subject to available local resources and partnerships, and would not duplicate or replace existing community college adult education services.
Supporters include AARP California, the Alzheimer’s Association, LeadingAge California, and the California Association for Adult Day Services. If signed into law, SB 971 would go into effect on January 1, 2027.
