Senator Steven Choi, Ph.D. (R-Irvine) announced that Senate Bill 971, his legislation to strengthen community-based programs supporting healthy aging, has passed the California State Assembly and will now return to the Senate for a concurrence vote before it can be sent to the Governor.
Sponsored by the California Senior Legislature, SB 971 establishes the Healthy Aging Community Partnerships Program, providing a voluntary framework for local entities and community organizations to work together to connect older Californians with programs and resources that promote healthy aging, independence and social engagement.
“California’s older adults deserve every opportunity to remain active, connected and independent in the communities they helped build,” said Senator Choi. “SB 971 recognizes that healthy aging is about more than health care. It is also about staying socially engaged, keeping up with technology, accessing reliable information and having the resources necessary to continue living independently. I am grateful to my Assembly colleagues for supporting this effort, and I look forward to a final step on the Senate Floor before going to the Governor.”
SB 971 encourages locally driven partnerships that build upon existing resources already available in communities. Depending on local needs and available resources, programs may include technology assistance, social engagement activities, health and wellness resources, caregiver support, fraud prevention, nutrition programs and other services that help older adults remain engaged and independent.
SB 971 previously passed the Senate and will now return to the Senate for concurrence in Assembly amendments. If the Senate concurs, the bill will be sent to the Governor for consideration.
