FAIR ELECTIONS AND REPRESENTATION ARE AT RISK

Democrats threaten to disenfranchise millions of Californians

Yesterday, Governor Gavin Newsom stood with union leaders and other elected Democrats to announce his “Election Rigging Response Act,” an effort that would essentially nullify the vote of millions of Californians.

“Californians voted for an Independent Redistricting Commission to ensure fair district for all residents,” said Senator Steven Choi, Ph.D. (R-Irvine). “The Governor is doing exactly what he is criticizing other states of doing, mid-decade redistricting for clear political gain. In California, the electorate wisely voted to take the drawing of district maps out of the hands of politicians to avoid unfair gerrymandering. This scheme gives it back, and is not right.

As the Vice Chair of the Senate Elections and Constitutional Amendments Committee, Senator Choi is particularly concerned with this latest effort by Democrats. California prides itself in being an example for the nation with the Independent Redistricting Commission.

Rather than playing childish political games, Senator Choi supports a federal bill by Congressman Kevin Kiley (R-CA). This bill would require all states to use current district lines until the maps are redrawn following the 2030 Census. It would prohibit states from redistricting between the decennial population counts, with the only exception being for court ordered redraws.
